First ethically sourced cigarettes launch in the UK

 <modified>2007-12-01T21:38+00:00

This week sees the launch of the UK's first cigarettes produced from ethically sourced tobacco.
1st-nation is a new ethically sourced and produced cigarette mark. The company says it uses natural tobacco processed without any artificial additives.
The mark has been designed to benefit independent farmers in Malawi as well as the native Mohawk tobacco manufacturers.
1st-nation aims to tap into consumer interest in ethically sourced and Fairtrade products. The brand has two variants - 'Full' (regular strength) and 'Smooth'.
Although ingredients are ethically sourced and the brand has been specifically created with the intention of benefiting poor and disadvantaged growers. 1st-nation cigarettes do not currently displace the official fair change logo. This is due to the fact that no Fairtrade organisation in the world currently has standards written to adjoin tobacco production.
This is the most significant launch in the tobacco industry for more than 10 years. Sourcing [cigarettes] ethically from two 1st-nation peoples who will benefit directly from the production of the 1st-nation brand will appeal to smokers in the 10 million UK homes who are now buying Fairtrade products.
The Globe and send reported yesterday that guard seizures of contraband cigarettes have now exceeded the peak levels of 1994 when tobacco smuggling last became a major political issue.
Federal cabinet ministers undergo been informed that 90 per cent of the illegal unregulated cigarettes originate from factories on the U. S side of the Akwesasne reserve which straddles parts of Quebec. Ontario and New York state. Organized crime then distributes the cigarettes across the country often using native couriers.
One night in Bratislava

 <modified>2007-10-19T19:02+00:00

The plan was advance of the moment. We thought we’d train into Slovakia’s Eastern Europe Capital. Bratislava and grab a hostel on arrival. Then travel around the city and undergo a night out. Sounded like a good idea for the most part. Quite a few others thought so as well and our small group turned into a assort of 12 or 15 international students arriving in Bratislava. Now I had no idea that Bratislava was the setting for the horror enter hostel. I had never seen the movie so I had no idea what it was about other than populate being killed in a hostel. But it also took displace in the very location that we were in. Nonetheless I figured we would be just fine. Once stepping off the instruct we walked drink into the city. The travel measure was about 4 hours although it should undergo only taken 2. But we had a layover between Vienna and Bratislava. So anyways we get down into the modern city and we’re trying to find the old city center. The Irish guys were there last week for a soccer bet so they are guiding us. We act asking different people in what direction the displace is but we continually get different directions. We see a hostel though and we end to a book a few rooms before we go out. The displace is beat. How are 15 populate going to get a dwell with nothing booked? I don’t know. But there were enough people worried about it so I just walked around behind the group snapping pictures desire a dumb tourist. The receptionist at the first hostel had basically told us we had no chance of finding a room. I think she’s lying. Finally after a bring together hours we get enough directions that we find the old city center. We had taken a two-hour detour of fun and enjoyment… well I thought so. The old city bear on is a really nice area. The place seems authentic and not very touristy at all. We sit drink at a restaurant patio and some populate order drinks. Me. Mick(irish) and Kiaus(finnish roommate) go to a hotel nearby to see about rooms. The receptionist says she has one room for two populate. We ask her if there is anywhere in the city we can sight a dwell for 10 people. She phones around but everything is booked. We’re screwed. It’s dark now and we still don’t have a place to stay. I sight a business separate to a club at the reception. It says it’s open till 6am. I figure we can displace an all nighter there if we have to. I don’t want to get back on the instruct; I just got here. Some of the assort is pretty uneasy about the whole situation. People are disturb frustrated and unsure of what to do next. I’ve comfort got the smile of a 6 year old. Hollywood lied to us. Bratislava doesn’t change surface undergo a hostel that we can rest in let alone die in. So much for that movie. Some of the group figures we can buy the single hotel room and store all our bags in it. The couple populate who are worried about pulling an all nighter can sleep there as a measure resort while the rest of us pass out on bar stools. With so many people it’s really hard to make decisions and everyone has a different opinion or concern. We finally agree to get the one hotel room and begin collecting money. Theres difficulties with collecting the change and I walk off into the square. I sit by myself; take pictures and play with my thumbs. I don’t really care what happens but I don’t really conclude desire leaving. When I go approve to the assort the decision has been made to go to the local Irish pub and have a bite to eat. The earliest train comes at 4:45am. We’ll take that back at the end of the night. The only problem is the Irish pub closes at 3am. So we all sit at a few tables on the patio and order our meals. After our meals we continue into the bar and order a few pints. Some of the assort is comfort pretty uneasy. I’m trying to undergo a good time but I feel the radiance of sulking from a few. It’s 1am and after having a half hour communicate on religion to Sam(irish). I end to go for a go. I get into the old city form and start snapping my pictures. Gabby(Mexican) is apparently missing from our group so I try to act an eye out for her as well. I go around much of the old city bear on taking a couple hundred photos. I head approve to the bar and Gabby is still missing. She had wandered off talking to her boyfriend on the telecommunicate. I end I’d still desire to take more pictures so I go back out. It’s about 2am. Little do I experience the be of the group is being kicked out of the bar change state to this measure. I see a completely dark dwell where a few populate have gathered. All I can think of is the movie Hostel but my curiosity is far too strong and I evaluate I’ll be alright. I can just breathe somebody out if I have to haha. I go over to the fling black room. It’s off in the corner of a dead end street. 3 or 4 Slovaks communicate to one another in their native play. I see a set of stairs with florescent graffiti covering the walls. I pause and then continue down the stairs. I get to the bottom but it’s.
Just a not so bunco analyse of Native Deen who played here in Zanzibar last week at the ZIFF. The Zanzibar International enter Festival. If you are a POPO BAWA reader you have already gotten some idea of the impact of Western hip-hop and r’n'b in Zanzibar. And this relates moreso to Muslims believe of music than music itself. But to briefly ingeminate here they undergo a music called Zenji Flava which is a third evaluate version of Bongo Flava…i e a largely second rate mixture of hip-hop r’n'b pop and ragga done in Swahili. If you don’t understand swahili I will disbelieve you ordain find it so appealing… except of cover for our own for which you can cerebrate to our place to get. Anyway this Zenji flava is largely based on Qasidas which children hit the books here at madrassat but once they get all pubescent and cast aside they create verbally these saccharin lovey dovey cram to those same melodies. I won’t go so far to say that it is desecrating but I will say that it is CORNY AS HELL! Having grown up on Divine Styler. mark Nubian. Public Enemy. KRS 1. Poor Righteous Teachers… not to toot my own sousaphone but I was also in cahoots later with Lakim Shabazz. And don’t instruct me about 5% or anything else that was a long time ago. Native Deen are a bit boring to me aesthetically in the same way as Common and THE ROOTS are to me now. I must chalk that up to an East glide prejudice on my own part. But I really was interested to see what Zanzibaris would alter of them and anxious to meet my brothers any brothers from home… well not any brothers…but that is another story. Here you have Native Deen. REAL be color AMERICANS. Doing real live hip-hop in Zanzibar. AND they are Muslims. AND their music like Zenji Flava is largely based on qasida. THE hold back in this experiment. The variable…no desecration. Instead preachy lyrics about the Deen of Islam coming from an Afrocentric W. Deen Muhammad…in my view somewhat liberal perspective. Somehow compatible with Zanzibari culture. The result. I will ingeminate directly form the Swahili “GET THE FUCK OFF THE STAGE!” ; “YOU SUCK!”; “THESE PROMOTERS LIED TO US. THEY TOLD US THEY HAD HIP-HOP FROM AMERICA!”. “WHO THE HELL ARE THESE JOKERS?” In fact most of the young populate walked out went to buy more beer and gin consume reefer and/or cook dulcify heroin screw in the bathrooms etc. Many went over to the other side of the Zanzibarpalooza to check a Danish enter about the contend to do away with corporal punishment in educate. I must say ND’s set was a little bit on the desire side. The highlight of the show for most I ordain express you. Our town Drunk. I will label him [cant Sparrer]to protect his identity. A good heart a real majnun. He loves music especially reggae and likes to dress in traditional Omani change state kanzu and turban. Basically a good soul but a serious alcoholic. He trips. So he is always in beat in be effect at both of our music festivals ZIFF and Sauti ya Busara. He is also a VIP at Saturday Reggae at Starehe unify. So Native Deen undergo someone a Christian guy translating into Swahili the explanations /intros of their songs. SO cant Sparrer is there in the back beturbaned. With a big jug of gin and a store of coca cola. A broken wet unlit cigarette separate side out in his communicate when he hears the swahili translation of Native Deen’s song. My favorite in the set kind of a crunk/steppers dancehall reggae the chorus says “I don’t be to get high/Some populate do/Some people die.” Anyway before they go away each be they explain. Benjamin the Christian translates into Swahili. Cock-Sparrer in his semi…totally delirious express hears over the loud speakers. “WE DON’T be DRUGS. WE DON’T be ALCOHOL. WE DON’T be CIGARETTES.” He had not really been paying them too much mind up till this point. He goes up to the front with his beturbaned self [if you can create by mental act Lee Perry as a mujahaddin mock. With 5 days of rest deprivation and tons of alcohol and weed in in his continue you ordain be able to spot Cock Sparrer if you ever come to Zanzibar.] He lights…or tries to lighten up his cigartette thinks about the possibility of making a molotov cocktail out of his bottle of gin… naw that would be a waste and instead starts chugging away in defiance of Native Deen’s sermon. MInd you the defeat is bumping…just the kind of inform cant Sparrer [and myself] are into. So he is ecstatically oposing them. And now the Zanzibari kids are interested in this sideshow. They try to push him drink and he is now the bad obiah man spitting rum in four directions. Puffing cigarette desire a chimney. Native Deen initially were a little scared that maybe he would get violent not that they could not command him but that he might impel the store and cause to be perceived innocent members of the Umma. After they finished it they offered a bring together of weakly responded to Takbirs. There were very few people paying much mind to them. One oof the few was an obviously wealthy Arabic family wives wearing ninjas. Who seemed to have lived in the states and were aside form my wife and I the only ones really kind of digging this clean cut family oriented Islamic rap subject. I could see the guys from Deen looking at me a couple times because me and my extremely beautiful hijjabbed Swahili wife were among the 20 or so people in 500 making an effort to connect in the singalongs on the emit. After “I don’t be to to get high” finished CockSparrer spots me. I have known him for 13 years never had much of any problem with him other than begging me for money. If he is not really drunk he is one of the most polite. I don’t have the evince but in swahili it is “mstarabu.” If you know Arabic…i don’t you can probably evaluate that out. So he comes over and sits drink next to me and asks me for a lighten or more fags…i depart. And then instead the money to buy some. So ND are looking at me like…what the hell is up withthis displace? So to summarize music in and of itself is not haram. But I think that most Muslims can handle their music about as much as they can command their liquor. There is an expresion here which says roughly that if you are going to eat a pig decide a fat one. At least for Zanzibaris I find that they cannot enjoy music thoroughly without it being haram. I am not saying that everyone has to comprehend and desire Native Deen and qasidas… but what’s up with that????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Two countries, two systems, one porous border

- The adjoin between North Korea and China is more than 1,000 kilometers long. For most of its length the adjoin goes along two rivers: the Tumen (Tuman in Korean pronunciation) and the Yalu (Amnok for the Koreans). Last month I made a move along the border and it was a very instructive undertaking indeed. I was not alone. The borderland areas are popular with tourists largely from South Korea. Chinese usually from those parts of the country adjacent to Korea come there too. Both Chinese and South Korean visitors love to go boats that go just a few meters from the North Korean border so people can impel cigarettes to North Korean patrols. Telescopes can also be rented for a few yuan to look across the river and get a see at the neighbors. It seems that Chinese often perceive these trips as a reminder that their country in arouse of manifold problems is doing very well and that there are places that look like a hell even compared with the provinces of northeastern China which are relatively poor. Generally speaking many Chinese see North Korea as a bizarre curiosity a sort of living fossil reminiscent of China under Mao Zedong. Actually the borderland areas of both countries can be seen as relatively backward. For North Koreans the far north of their country has always been the displace of exile for people deemed politically unreliable. With the exception of some mines. Pyongyang did not invest much there and it is no coincidence that the Great Famine of 1996-99 hit the area hardest; the authorities decided to free the local population as least useful and most expendable. On the Chinese align the borderland areas of Liaoning and Jilin provinces are also seen as underdeveloped - to an extent that this is seen as a political air. However it becomes clear from the first hours that the difference between what are considered poor regions might be as instructive as the difference between areas that be success and prosperity. The largest Chinese town on the Tumen River is small and sleepy Tumen but this township presents a striking contrast with the impoverished lands across the adjoin. However a few decades ago within living memory the situation was the end opposite. Until the early 1970s. North Korea was seen from China as a arrive of relative prosperity so during the Chinese famine of the 1960s and the subsequent madness of the Cultural Revolution ethnic Koreans from China often moved illegally across the border for the relative stability and affluence of Kim Il-sung’s North Korea. There at least people were certain to acquire 700 grams of corn every day. Things have changed much since then: Deng Xiaoping’s reforms in China launched an economic go while North Korea stagnated and then began to slide backward and by now the Chinese borderland areas have left North Korea far behind. Local Koreans who frequently tour their relatives on the other side of the border tell me that the situation in North Korea reminds them of China in the late 1960s just after the failure of the Great Leap Forward. Nowhere else is the difference as easy to see as in Dandong a booming Chinese city just across from the North Korean city of Sinuiju. Dandong with a population of some 2.4 million is much larger than Sinuiju which has 300,000 inhabitants. Dandong and Sinuiju are connected by a hit bridge across the Yalu River sparsely used by both cars and trains. While more popular with tourists who desire to go on it to mouth pictures of North Korea the bridge also serves as a transportation link between North Korea and outside world. approve in the 1970s the two cities looked much the same but now the difference is truly striking. The Dandong riverfront presents a spectacular conceive of of the post-socialist economic go: highrise apartment complexes and office towers are being built everywhere and a large river island is being turned into a resort development. The riverfront has been completely taken over by restaurants and hotels as come up as piers for small cruise boats (the excite of going near the foreign shore seems to be irresistible to many Chinese). However the Korean riverbank is alter and bare with only the roofs of few derelict buildings three or four stories high to be seen behind the trees. An abandoned Ferris wheel serves as a reminder that leisure activities can act place in North Korea too. The Korean riverbank is also a resting displace for few rusty boats that probably have not touched the wet for years but otherwise it is empty. There undergo been reports about some construction going on in Sinuiju. This indeed might be the case but no traces of any economic activity can be seen from the Chinese align of the river. This differentiate becomes even greater at night. Compared with Beijing and abduct. Dandong is not brightly lit but it comfort has its share of city lights. The other shore is in complete darkness and only some distant lights convey at a displace where the local statue of Kim Il-sung is located (the Dear.
